Magic Weekend Betting Tips and Predictions | Day 1

The first and what will be the busiest day of the Magic Weekend should see some fantastic rugby being played at St James’ Park and we for one can’t wait as all 12 Betfred Super League sides prepare to make their way to Newcastle.

Below is our preview of the matches from the first three matches and there are some cracking games in store.

Widnes Vikings v St Helens: 13:00

After Toronto and Toulouse serve up the amuse-bouche, the main meal gets underway with St Helens’ battle with Widnes. Both sides have very different aims this season and it is the one game of the four on Saturday in which we could see something of a blowout scoreline, with Saints scoring a combined total of 186 points in their last three outings.

The Merseyside outfit have attacking ability all over the park and they have more than enough about them to cause a real problem for Widnes. One player to look out for in this one will be the mercurial full-back Ben Barba who has bagged hat-tricks in his last two appearances, watch him if you can, because everything indicates he will be moving back to the NRL next season.

Handicap Tp: St Helens -22 @ EVS

DD/HH Tip: Ben Barba to score the first try @ 4/1

Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves

Two of the form sides in the league will go toe-to-toe in the middle match and it could be a thrilling game between two excellent teams. For the third match in a row, Wire coach Steve Price has named an unchanged 19 and with the Primrose and Blue absolutely flying at the minute, they will be well up for this one.

Wigan meanwhile are aspiring to overhaul Saints at the top of the league and a win at St James’ Park would certainly keep them in touching distance of Justin Holbrook’s side, but they will have to do it without captain Sean O’Loughlin who misses out with a calf injury. This is a tough match to call and both sides arrive in good nick, but we are just about going for Warrington in this one.

Handicap Tip: Warrington Wolves +2 @ EVS

DD/HH Tip: Josh Charnley to score first try @ 8/1

Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers

A West Yorkshire derby rounds off proceedings on the first day and if it is anything like the game the pair put on when they met at Elland Road earlier this year, we are in for a treat. Cas just about edged that one, and we think it will be another tight affair when the two rivals meet again in the north-east.

Neither side has been in great nick of late, with the Tigers being beaten by Saints in the Challenge Cup last weekend and Leeds, although they beat Widnes last time out, they have been far from their all-conquering best. The best match of the day may well be the middle one and this could be a particularly scrappy game as both sides look to reignite their respective seasons.

Handicap Tip: Leeds Rhinos -4 @ EVS

DD/HH Tip: Ash Handley to score the first try @ 8/1

Check back here tomorrow for our betting predictions ahead of the second day, where we look forward to the biggest derby in the league as well as a potentially decisive battle at the bottom of the table.
