Sir Alex To Bring MUFC Momentum Into Cheltenham?

Give Me A Copper, Clan Des Obeaux & Man Utd to win - 80/1

Momentum in sport can be a funny thing. Just ask Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reigns from Jose Mourinho and has changed the club’s fortunes round in under just two months. The red side of Manchester has gone from being a deflated bunch to the most lively and vocal fanbase around. Their current run of form looks destined to continue, with the players looking eager to gallop over the line and assert their right to be playing in the Champions League next season.

One man who has certainly been enjoying United’s current ride has been Sir Alex Ferguson. The club’s greatest ever manager has continued to be a frequent visitor at Old Trafford ever since his retirement, cheering the team on and chewing on that same piece of gum since 1986. He may not be stood on the touchline or tormenting the fourth official anymore, but his great presence is still felt all the same.

Fergie Time at Cheltenham?

It has been great to see the iconic legend beaming recently and Ferguson will be hoping to be cheering some more next week. Yes, that’s right, the Scot isn’t just known for his love of football. As a horse racing fan, Ferguson stakes a claim in having partnerships with two horses – Give Me A Copper and Clan Des Obeaux.

Both horses will be competing at Cheltenham next week and ActiveWins are here to give you the low down on the latest odds. Betfred have each horse down with some good value and they are being tipped to be strong performers during the week. Can Ferguson carry over some winning United momentum to the Festival and be cheering in the crowd yet again?

Give Me A Copper – 11/2

The race: Ultima Handicap Chase

When: Tuesday 12th - 2:50pm

Price: 11/2

Heading into the 2:50pm Handicap Chase on the Tuesday, Ferguson’s horse will take to the track as the outright favourite to win the Ultima. Running in all red and white stars, Give Me A Copper is valued at 11/2 with Betfred and there are certainly valid reasons for him to be the market leader. A week to the day after United’s last minute victory in ‘Fergie time’, could the Scot be celebrating another dramatic finish?

Connections with Give Me A Copper are definitely confident about his chances of prevailing on the day. Speaking on the Final Furlong podcast, assistant trainer Harry Derhan actually flagged the Betfred favourite as their best chance of a winner at the meeting. You can certainly be sure that the horse will be in prime condition heading into the race, as his trainer is currently operating with a strikerate of 32% in the last fortnight. That is some red hot form!

Trainer Paul Nicholls has also been publicly speaking ahead of Cheltenham, admitting that he is a horse that he loves to train. Despite having never won the race in the past, you can be sure that Nicholls will have him in tip-top shape ahead of the highly-anticipated chase. Give Me A Copper came 4th at Sandown but as sports fans know, when Fergie is in the crowd, his team always have a chance of winning.

Clan Des Obeaux – 4/1

The race: Gold Cup

When: Friday 15th - 3:30pm

Price: 4/1

During his managerial career as United boss, Ferguson got his hands on plenty of silverware. 26 trophies to be exact. Funnily enough, only one of them was golden. Now, on Friday 15th, the Scot will be supporting Clan Des Obeaux in his race for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Betfred’s price at 4/1 can definitely be regarded as one at high value, as this horse knows how to win a race. On Boxing Day, Clan Des Obeaux was the winner of the King George VI Chase – a race that is widely regarded as one of the best Gold Cup trails in the UK. The Gold Cup champion Native River couldn’t catch up with him on the day, with the two finishing closely together at the Betfair Chase earlier on in the season. Clan Des Obeaux only finished a few lengths behind him and the race was a testament to the horse’s ability.

What was even more impressive than his performance at the King George Chase was his victory at Ascot. Triumphing over the highly-regarded Terrefort, CDO pinged the last to pull clear by an imposing 11 lengths. The run certainly cemented his place as a valuable Gold Cup candidate. His impressive runs has led Clan Des Obeaux to become an adored member of the Ditcheat team and even as a young horse, you get the feeling that a crack at the Gold Cup was always going to be the plan.

To add more legitimate claim to CDO winning the race, his trainer is actually a four-time Gold Cup champion. Nicholls boasts significant success at Cheltenham winning three times on the bounce from 2007 – 2009. These victories came with Kauto Star twice and Denman, with his first one coming back in 1999 with See More Business. A fifth win would definitely be an iconic landmark for the well-known trainer and Clan Des Obeaux could be the horse to grant it to him.

United To Beat Wolves 23/20

Finishing off Cheltenham week, us sporting fans have also been treated with some interesting FA Cup fixtures. It certainly is the business end of the season now, as the competition is already at the quarter-final stage. With a place at Wembley now up for grabs, the stakes have been raised and United were granted a difficult away trip to Wolves.

Nuno Santo deserves all the praise coming his way this season, as he and the Wanderers sit very comfortably in seventh place. Given the wealth and power of the ‘top six’, this is arguably the best accomplishment that Wolves could potentially achieve in the league this season. With no threat of relegation on the cards, they will, therefore, be putting all their eggs in one basket with the FA Cup. Both clubs will come into the fixture in good form, but United’s squad will be severely tested due to their injury crisis.

Solskjaer will, however, be just as keen to win his first managerial trophy as United boss, and this is his best chance of doing so. Betfred have them down as 23/20 to beat Wolves and 7/2 to be outright winners of the competition.
