We may only be two months into the calendar year, but 2019 has already provided sports fans with some thrilling events and occasions. From Six Nations drama to the heated action in the Premier League, our TV screens and social media feeds have not been short of talking points recently.
The world of sport has often been a dominating topic of conversation, but for us millennials, following our sporting stars and teams has become a fundamental part of our day-to-day routines. So, what is March bringing to the table? Carry on reading to find out.
March 2019 is supplying us with one of the greatest UFC cards of all time. After cancelling UFC 233 and Robert Whittaker pulling out of UFC 234 the night before the fight, Dana White needed to pull all the strings and deliver a worthy PPV event that fans would go crazy for. And boy did he deliver.
With two belts on the line, the night looks destined to be a hit, particularly with Jon Jones and Tyron Woodley walking into the Octagon. This isn’t just in reference to the two fighter’s striking powers, but the occasion itself. Fans love seeing a double whammy of title bouts and on March 2nd, the Light heavyweight and Welterweight Championships will be up for grabs. That isn’t all either, as we also have the highly-acclaimed and fan favourite Ben Askren making his debut for the organisation. His competitor? Hall of Famer Robbie Lawler. It doesn’t get any bigger than this.
In terms of betting opportunities, UFC 235 is full of them, but the odds are weighed heavily towards the champion’s chances on the night. For the main headline, Anthony Smith will walk into the Octagon as the 11/2 underdog with Betfred, a huge price for a title challenger. This is not to hamper Lionheart’s recent success at Light Heavyweight, but more of a testament to his competitor’s credentials. Recognised by many as the greatest of all time, Bones looks determined to extend his UFC legacy and cement his name as the most dominant champion of all time.
The other man with the title on the night also finds himself in a similar position to Jones. Woodley will enter the cage on Saturday night looking for his fifth Welterweight defence, but he faces stern opposition in the undefeated Kamaru Usman. After his five-round war with Rafael dos Anjos, the Nigerian earnt his shot at the title and he has been confidently speaking ahead of the bout. It certainly is an intriguing matchup and you find can Usman at great value with Betfred. He is currently 6/4 to defeat Woodley on March 2nd.
There may be no title on the line in the third main event, but there is equally just as much excitement. The ex-Bellator and One Championship champion will enter the Octagon with a record of 18-0, and his UFC fight will be against the Ruthless one, Robbie Lawler. We all know what to expect with Funky, as being one of the greatest wrestlers to ever compete in the sport, he will undoubtedly be taking this fight to the ground. Lawler’s takedown defence will need to be top notch to prevent Askren’s shooting, and the experienced fighter enters UFC 235 as the clear underdog at 2/1.

Formula One Returns
The F1 is back and we are going down under. Kicking off the 2019 season, the racers will first take to the track in Australia on March 17th. Inevitably, the build-up to the event has been centred around the reigning champion Lewis Hamilton and whether anybody has the tools or capabilities to stop him.
Having won the last three of four Championships, including the previous two, the Englishman is undoubtedly the man to beat this season, with the F1 odds reflecting this. Hamilton has been made the outright favourite to claim his sixth F1 title this season, with Sebastian Vettel being his most likely competitor. England vs Germany has often been a prominent rivalry in the world of sport, and Formula One is no exception. Admittedly there is no malice between the two, but both Vettel and Hamilton are the standout names to watch out for this season.
However, as fellow fans will know, the F1 is an unpredictable sport and no racer can ever be ruled out of contention. Coming through the ranks, the two young prodigies in Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen look to be the most likely racers to try and topple either Vettel or Hamilton. Both drivers are just 21-years-old, but Betfred has them down with great value to try and upset the odds.
The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit always acts as the perfect opening venue for the Formula One season and, after a four month break, racing fans will be eager to see who crosses the finishing line first to gather some early-season momentum for the year ahead. When it’s “Lights out” in Australia, which driver will you be backing?
Stakes Hot Up In The Premier League
We are officially into the business end of the Premier League season. There is a reason why so many fans label the English division as the greatest in the world, because there may only be twelve games left, but nobody can be sure as to who will finish where.
Cheltenham isn’t the only race to look forward to this month as at the top end of the table, it continues to be a two horse contest between Manchester City and Liverpool. A singular point separates the top two currently, with the Reds just edging their noses in front. Jurgen Klopp is desperate to deliver Merseyside with their first ever PL trophy, and March will be a defining month for them. Just below the two clubs, there is a battle brewing over the Champions League places.
Four clubs are currently fighting for the two remaining spaces, as the proposition of not playing in the top European competition next season is unthinkable for either Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United or Chelsea. Undoubtedly, the positions will continue to chop and change over the coming weeks, with Activewins predicting the race for the fourth spot to go down to the final day of the season. Here’s some fixtures to watch out for that could shape up the rankings:
- Saturday 2nd March: Tottenham vs Arsenal
- Sunday 3rd March: Everton vs Liverpool
- Sunday 10th March: Arsenal vs Manchester United
- Sunday 17th March: Everton vs Chelsea
- Sunday 31st March: Liverpool vs Tottenham
